Embracing Healthy Attitudes

Healing
Healing means recognizing and accepting our negative emotional and thinking patterns and breaking these unwanted cycles as we focus on learning to see with expanded possibilities. The most challenging step is initially admitting to ourselves that negativity is natural but that we want to change. Secondly, we want to grow into a more open and optimistic person. We will learn how to help ourselves heal. In order to start moving in that direction, it may be helpful to look at healthy attitudes to orient us.
Here are some of the healthy attitudes and behaviors that help us break cycles of personal negativity that we utilize in the Mind Fitness practice:
Our initial reactions to new people and things are welcoming and optimistic. We are open to the possibility that they will be a force for good in our lives.
We value a sense of humor. We can laugh at ourselves and can easily have fun.
We are intimate and share ourselves fully without hiding behind cynicism, anger, depression, or criticism.
We can admit to some negative feelings, knowing that they represent only a part of our experience—not all.
We don’t have to worry about whether or not we are happy.
We do what feels suitable for us. We trust our intuition.
We meet each day with self-confidence and favorable expectations rather than a gnawing dread.
We have compassion for others. We can give freely without feeling that we are making a sacrifice. We want to support others in doing their best. We can admire others because we don’t fear that we lose if they win.
We feel good, worthy, and in control enough to handle the tasks before us.
We let ideas of who we are and what we want to do emerge from within ourselves rather than having them dictated by external forces.
We maintain a level of self-discipline that makes us feel good about ourselves. We are focused and have clear priorities.
We feel a balance among the many aspects of our lives.
Are we all of those wonderful things at all times? I doubt it, but knowing some signposts helps us chart our path.
Reflections
Thoughtfully reread the bulleted list above.
Pick out one or two healthy attitudes and behaviors that you
would like to see expand into greater possibilities in your life.
I picked out #2 on the list about adding humor and laughing more with myself.
What are yours?
